2013 Cannes Film Festival Poster Celebrates Paul Newman

The 66th Cannes Film Festival poster was released today announcing the 2013 festival, which will take place from May 15 - 26. This year's poster features an image of legendary film industry couple Paul Newman and Joanne Woodward, taken in 1963 while they were shooting A New Kind of Love by Melville Shavelso.

Festival organizers said they wanted to pay tribute to the late Paul Newman andhis wife highly acclaimed actress, Joanne Woodward, who won an Oscar for The Three Faces of Eve directed by Nunnally Johnson in 1957. The couple attended Cannes for the first time in 1958, the same year they were married. That year, The Long Hot Summer directed by Martin Ritt - the first film they starred in together - was selected presented at the festival. The Long Hot Summer, the first film the couple starred in together, was presented at the festival that year. In 1973, they returned for The Effect of the Gamma Rays on Man-in-the-Moon Marigolds and in 1987 for The Glass Menagerie (both starred Newman).

The French agency Bronx designed the poster with the aim of “playing around movement and depth of field to reinforce the cinematographic effect”. Cannes officials said the poster “conveys a bright and tender conception of what a modern couple is, thanks to a perfect balance in a love swirl. These two lovers seem to be losing their bearings, which makes us want to live cinema as an infinite desire.”
