Cannes Film Festival : Pierre Lescure Appointed As President

Pierre Lescure, 68, was officially nominated to succeed 83-year old Gilles Jacob as President of the prestigious Cannes Film Festival on Monday January 14th, 2014. He is set to take office on July 1st, following this year’s 67th edition (May 14- May 25).

Jacob, who has been with the Festival since 1978 as managing director, was named President in 2001. Starting 2015, he will serve as Cannes’ Honorary President.

The unpaid President is in charge of representing the Festival and maintaining its strategy and evolution. He manages a budget of approximately 20 million euros, about half of which is from public funds. Mr. Lescure will work hand in hand with Cannes’ artistic director, Thierry Fremaux, who joined the Festival in 2001.

A former journalist, Lescure co-founded France’s pay-TV operator Canal Plus with Andre Rousselet in 1984. He then became its President in 1994, turning the company into France’s biggest financier of French cinema and unequalled leader in pay TV. He also served as a member of the jury of the Deauville American Film Festival this year and as its President in 2002. In 2012, he led a French Ministry of Culture commission on digital content and cultural policy that released a report for a new national anti-piracy policy.

Over the years, Lescure has built a large network in the entertainment industry. He is expected to further open up Cannes to international and Hollywood films, a process initiated by Thierry Fremaux.
