Save Jacques Demy’s Les Parapluies De Cherbourg!

If you fancy seeing Jacques Demy’s masterpiece Les Parapluies de Cherbourg in the theater, now it's possible to help fund the film's restoration and digitization. An online call for donations was recently initiated by the director’s children, Rosalie Varda (his foster daughter) and Mathieu Demy with the aim of raising 25,000 euros to supplement public funds already received for the restoration.

In the few days since the campaign's launch, 183 sponsors have donated 9920 euros. “It’s incredible, I feel very thankful,” said Mathieu Demy. Romain, a 22-year-old Demy fan has donated 60 euros and says he’s “willing to give more as long as it's within my means.” Cécile, who lives in Paris, also gave money to see one of her favorite movies on a big screen, “I’ll be very moved. Seeing it the way it was shown at its release in 1964 will be deeply touching”.

For these film buffs, there is nothing surprising about asking internet users to finance this restoration. Mathieu Demy explains that “the Ministry of Culture takes care of heritage films but each restoration costs around 100,000 euros, that’s why alternative financing options are being developed.”

Rosalie Varda is already thinking about funding other digitization thanks to internet users and the KissKissBankBank platform. Les Parapluies de Cherbourg needs 110,000 euros to be restored. A big part of it has been underwritten by the Festival de Cannes and LVMH. Internet users still have one month to participate in this project.
