Year 2012 : A Success For French Cinema Abroad

The 15th Rendez-Vous with French Cinema wrapped up last Monday in Paris, marking another successful year for the most important film market organized by Unifrance. Now in its 15th year, Rendez-Vous has become a landmark event in promoting French films abroad. This year, 101 films were screened (of which 70 had never been shown before outside of France) in the presence of 400 distributors and 150 journalists from all around the world.

Unifrance recently released its 2012 annual report demonstrating an exceptional year for French film production with 140 million euros generated by box office admissions - an 88% increase compared to 2011 - and 875 million euros in gross revenues, twice as much as in 2011. The unexpected success of films such as Intouchables and Taken 2 have contributed to this year's upswing in ticket sales. Intouchables, a comedy starring Omar Sy and François Cluzet was not only a hit in France and Europe but around the world as well (1.7 million tickets sold in South Korea, 1.6 million in Mexico,1 million in Brazil…). Olivier Megaton's Taken 2 is a terrific example of the viability of the Luc Besson-Europacorp system, which makes blockbusters in English with French technicians. The success of The Artist (5.7 million admissions in the United States, 1.65 million admissions in the United Kingdom…) joins the two former to cap off a stellar year for French film sales.

Unifrance is an organization in charge of the promotion of French cinema worldwide.
