French Tv Drama The Returned Acquired By Music Box Films

After being purchased by more than 20 countries around the world, the French hit television series Les Revenants [The Returned], has been acquired by the Chicago-based art house distributor Music Box Films and will be aired in October on Sundance Channel. It will also be available on VOD platforms on January 1, 2014 and in DVD/Blu-Ray on January 21.The series will premiere Oct. 31 at 9 p.m. and air Thursdays at 9 p.m. as Sundance looks to capitalize on the wave of horror-themed fare that includes Walking Dead, FX's American Horror Story (also returning in October), NBC's Hannibal, Fox's The Following and more.

Created by Fabrice Gobert and produced by Caroline Benjo, Jimmy Desmarais and Carole Scotta at Haut et Court, this supernatural drama has an impressive cast of big screen talents such as Anne Consigny, Clotilde Hesme and Frederic Pierrot. The first season, composed of eight episodes, co-produced and broadcast by Canal + last year, received the largest viewership for an original series in the history of the TV channel. The show received additional international attention when aired last spring on the UK's Channel 4, the first non-English series on the channel in 20 years.

The Returned is based on the feature film Les Revenants by Robin Campillo. Set in Annecy, a French mountain town, the suspenseful narrative follows a seemingly random collection of people who attempt to regain their homes and reclaim their lives without realizing that they’ve been dead for years and that nobody is waiting for them. As they struggle to reintegrate with their families and past lovers, buried secrets emerge and mysteries develop as they grapple with a miraculous and sinister new reality, and it seems they are not the only ones to have returned from the dead.

The acquisition of Les Revenants occurs as French television is gaining notoriety and increasingly distributed worldwide. According to an annual study by TVFI and the National Film Centre (CNC) sales of French television seri abroad increased by 14.3% in 2012 to € 22.8 million.
