Good Results For French Film In 2012

The CNC (Centre national du cinéma et de l’image animée) has just released the results of a study on French theater admissions for 2012. Here are some excerpts from the report, the details of which can be found on the CNC official website.

According to recent estimates, theater admissions reached 19.4 million in December 2012. After an exceptional year in 2011, admissions totalled 204.26 million in 2012. This result remains higher than the ten-year average of 193.2 million.

The market share for French films reached more than 40% in 2012In 2012, the market share for French films remains high with 40.2% (40.9% in 2011). In 2012, admissions for French films accounted for 82,03 million admissions, i.e. a decrease of 7.7% compared to 2011. This result is higher than the ten-year average (75.43 milllion). Among the movies that helped French cinema to stay on course are Alain Chabat’s Sur la piste du Marsupilami (5,302,691.12 admissions), Thomas Gilou’s La Vérité si je mens ! 3 (4 613,791.10  admissions) and Laurent Tirard’s Astérix et Obélix : Au service de Sa Majesté (3 759,271.13). It is worth noting Matthieu Delaporte’s off-the-beaten-track movie Le Prénom was a tremendous success with 3,337,191.20 admissions.

Three-quarter of cinema screens are offering digital projectionsFull conversion to digital by French cinema screens will be achieved in 2013.  At the end of 2012, more than 4 800 screens were digital (more than 88% of total screens). More than 1 500 cinemas were equipped in the digital format with at least one digital projection equipment (more than 76% of total cinemas).

In 2012, the release of films in 3D was stable. 42 films were released (in 2D and 3D) against 43 films in 2011, 23 in 2010, 16 in 2009. Films in 3D accounted for 48 million admissions (25 % of total admissions).
