SkyBoy, Creative Lab 2017 Startup, Answers 3 Questions

During the weeks leading up to the third edition of the French-American Creative Lab, we invite you to learn more about the 8 French startups selected to participate in the program. To kick off this series of interviews, let us introduce you to SkyBoy, the inventor of Overlap Reality®, a new type of immersive experience where reality and virtuality overlap.

SkyBoy’s unique, patented technology enables virtual images to be juxtaposed with our real surroundings, providing a far more vivid effect than augmented reality allows. And what’s even better--viewers can easily share their experience on social media!

Their most spectacular projects include “Special Polar Christmas," a project in which they transformed the Galeries Lafayette in Paris into a virtual, ice-capped fairy tale by overlapping the real shopping area with animated images. SkyBoy also made waves with an immersive experience created to support the city of Paris' application as host city for the 2024 Olympic Games.

SkyBoy's founders, François-Xavier Goemaere and Vincent Burgevin, agreed to answer a few questions:

What is it that motivates you in your work?
When we started SkyBoy, our primary motivation was to create a new type of emotion by reconciling the real and the virtual! Three years later, this motivation remains intact. :-)

What has been your biggest challenge in developing the Overlap Reality®?
Our biggest challenge was to develop a robust technology while keeping in mind that the important thing is not the technology but the story and the emotion it will allow users to experience!

What are you expecting to take away from the French-American Creative Lab?
Beyond the pragmatic and useful information that we will gain throughout the program, and the enriching networking opportunities that the Creative Lab will foster, we hope to capture the energy surrounding entrepreneurship in the U.S. and confirm that expanding to the U.S. is definitely our next challenge at SkyBoy!

SkyBoy’s founders, François-Xavier Goemaere and Vincent Burgevin, will be in New York from November 6 - 10 and in Los Angeles from November 12 – 15, 2017. If you would like to meet with them, contact us at creative-lab@frenchculture.org.
