Night of Philosophy 2019: Film Screenings and VR Experiences

Join us on February 2, 2019 at 7PM for A Night of Philosophy and Ideas, the all-night marathon of philosophical debate, performances, screenings, readings, and music co-presented by Brooklyn Public Library and the Cultural Services of the French Embassy.

15 hours by Wang Bing, presented by the CNAP

For the first time in the US, the CNAP - Centre National des Arts Plastiques (National Centre for Visual Arts) - will present the film 15 hours. A recent acquisition of the CNAP, this film is directed by Chinese artist Wang Bing and was released in 2017. This 15-hour long masterpiece was shot in a centralized garment processing facility consisting of 18 000 small production units employing a total of around 300 000 migrant workers in southeast China. The artist started to shoot before 8 am and followed one group of workers until they clocked off at night, faithfully recording their life and work through this one day.

The film will be introduced by Pascale Cassagnau, curator at the CNAP, at 7:45pm at the Info Commons Lab.

Wang Bing was born in China in 1967, in the province of Shaanxi. He is a filmmaker, cameraman and producer. He created in 1999 the Wang Bing Film Studio. After his studies in photography at the Institute of Plastic Arts in Shenyang from 1992 to 1995, he entered the Department of Film Photography of Beijing. From 1999-2003, Wang Bing worked independently pursuing an ambitious project: he filmed the old industrial city of Shenyang recording with his camera the life of the district’s workers, one that would later be destroyed by municipal reforms. This is thus the origin of his project A l'ouest des rails.

Les Impatients by le peuple qui manque

Curatorial platform le peuple qui manque (A People Is Missing), represented by its founders Aliocha Imhoff & Kantuta Quirós, will broadcast Les Impatients, a video installation about the great issues of our time, each episode dealing with a contemporary matter. The first episode takes place in Chicago and Detroit, where the marks of the subprime crisis and the wounds inflicted upon black lives are challenged by the movement Black Lives Matter ; the second episode was filmed in Leipzig, where the movement that led to the Fall of the Berlin Wall began ; the third episode focuses on the political, intellectual movement of protest "Nuit Debout" in Paris, where appeared the common joy of rediscovering the possibility of politics ; the fourth episode was filmed in Dakar.

Le peuple qui manque will participate in the Night of Philosophy's program of discussions.

The video installation will start at 8pm at the Dweck Lobby.

Discussion at 4:30am: "Rhapsodies for the Present : Museotopias, Chronotopes, Conditional Stories (Chicago, Paris, Dakar, Leipzig, La Réunion, Lima, Kollasuyu)".

Aliocha Imhoff and Kantuta Quirós are art theorists and exhibition curators based in Paris and the founders of the curatorial platform, le peuple qui manque. They have developed for several years a research project that calls for a new ecology knowledge, based on curatorial formats that design contemporary thoughts (diplomatic fiction, the fictional process, directing of controversies, assemblies and experiences of thought to scale 1:1). Among their latest curatorial projects and exhibitions are Le procès de la fiction (Nuit Blanche, 2017), and Une Constituante migrante (Centre Pompidou, 2017). They were residents at Method Room in Chicago, at the Rebuild Foundation in 2016 and at the Ateliers Médici in 2018. Kantuta Quirós is associate professor at the Ecole Nationale Supérieure d’Architecture. Aliocha Imhoff teaches cinema and art theory at Université Paris 1.

L'héritage de la chouette / The Owl's Legacy by Chris Marker

The event will also feature Chris Marker's Owl's Legacy (1989), a 13-episode series, totaling nearly six hours and featuring artists and philosophers from around the world. Presented for the first time in New York, the film reflects on the legacy of ancient Greece over the centuries. Reproducing the model of the ancient banquet, the guests exchange ideas while drinking wine, in Paris, Tbilisi, Athens and Berkeley. The title of each episode refers to a conceptual Greek word (Symposium, Olympics, Democracy, Nostalgia, Logomachy, Cosmogony...). The work is also illustrated by archival material and interviews.

Chris Marker, who died in 2012 in his home city of Paris, was a celebrated writer, photographer and documentary film director. Best known for his films La Jetée, A Grin Without a Cat, and Sans Soleil, he was described by fellow filmmaker Alain Resnais as “the prototype of the twenty-first-century man.”

The film will start at 8pm at the Balcony Conference Room.


BattleScar by Nico Casavecchia and Martin Allais

This all-night marathon will include VR experiences with Battlescar, a coming of age drama, narrated by Rosario Dawson, that explores the theme of identity through the use of animation and immersive environments in virtual reality.

Nico Casavecchia is an Argentine director, screenwriter and illustrator based in Los Angeles. His work employs mixed media techniques ranging from animation to live action. He directed his first feature film Finding Sofía in 2016 and A Boy and His Atom, a stop-motion animated short film created by IBM Research scientists that was made by moving carbon monoxide molecules.

Martin Allais is a strong all-round visual artist, illustrator, animator and director. His work represents a mixture of various techniques. Experimentation, freshness and playfulness are key elements in his work, which strongly reflects in his finished pieces. He co-founded the collective No-Domain and directed many commercials.

The VR experience will be accessible from 8pm to 2am in the Adult Learning Center. Tickets for the experience will be released at the entrance of the room at 8 PM, 9 PM, 10 PM, 11 PM, 12 AM, 1 AM.

I Saw the Future by François Vautier

To complete the immersive experience, the event will present I Saw the Future. In a dark expanse that could be the cosmos, Arthur C. Clarke’s voice and face appear in the distance. His features quickly dematerialize into a multitude of shimmering pixels, creating an enveloping space out of which the thoughts of the famed author of 2001: A Space Odyssey emerge.

Born in France in 1964, François Vautier is a filmmaker, video artist and researcher. After graduating in Fine Arts, he worked in art galleries. He funded two companies with the TV writer and director Raphael Nadjari, producing highly creative titles. He expanded on shooting processes in virtual studios for his second film Déjà Vu. For the European TV channel ARTE he directed Twenty Show, a user-generated film. I Saw The Future is his first VR film.
