BIRD PEOPLE (2014)

Directed by Pascale Ferran
France

Described as “the most inspired thing I’ve seen [at Cannes]” by Grantland critic Wesley Morris, Bird People, from writer-director Pascale Ferran (Lady Chatterley), introduces the most unexpected and whimsical plot twist you are likely to see on screen this year. Far be it from us to spoil Ferran’s extraordinary coup de cinema – one that is achieved through a visual technique that defies easy explanation. Instead, let us simply say that the film’s narrative turn comes in a second part that follows twenty-something hotel housekeeper Audrey (Anaïs Demoustier, The French Minister) as she is asked to stay on after her normal shift. Then again, this is not to undersell an exceptionally involving first half that focuses on American business traveler and hotel patron Gary’s (Josh Charles, The Good Wife) momentous and sudden decision to leave everything. Director: Pascale Ferran 2014 France 128 mins. NR DCP
