Winner of the Golden Bear at the Berlin Film Festival and Academy Award nominee for Best Documentary Feature, Fire at Sea is a portrait of the European migrant crisis from the vantage point of the Sicilian island of Lampedusa.

In recent decades, hundreds of thousands of refugees from Africa and the Middle East have landed on the otherwise sleepy fishing island, which Gianfranco Rosi films commentary-free. Alongside the work of rescue operations (which mostly take place offshore) Fire at Sea introduces characters like Lampedusa's sole doctor and Samuele, an anxious but charming boy from a family of fishermen. With its emphasis on the quotidian lives of the island's small community, this essential and timely portrait sees not the abstracted state of emergency depicted by the worldwide media, but how even on a tiny island, the two worlds barely touch.
