Band of Outsiders: Women Crime Writers
June 29- August 17
This
series of adaptations of women’s writing includes renowned classics and a host of lesser-known gems, all directed by men. But watch for the women’s touch: the focus on the home, often fraught with anxiety, exposing women—and sometimes children—to peril; the complexity of women characters whose lives are caught between their desires and society’s expectations or who actively seek liberation from restrictive mores; and the relish with which ordinary men’s dark impulses are unmasked.

Panique by Julien Duvivier (1947)
July 02, 14, 15 & 29

Based on a novel by Georges Simenon, Panique adapts the elements of classic film noir—a murder, a femme fatale, a romantic obsession, a frame-up, all rendered in unforgiving black-and-white—into bitter and brilliant satire. Two years after World War II, Duvivier delivers a stinging portrait of a society where intolerance still rules and justice is just another sideshow.
