THE THOUSAND PLANETS OF LUC BESSON

The American Cinematheque welcomes Luc Besson to the Egyptian Theatre with a double feature of THE PROFESSIONAL and LA FEMME NIKITA!

If the heroes of Luc Besson’s thrillers seem driven, they pale next to the director, who is one of the most phenomenally successful and influential French filmmakers of the last three decades. Born to parents who were scuba instructors, Besson had hoped to pursue a career in marine biology until a diving accident at age 17 made that impossible; given his love of writing and photography, he thought he’d try cinema instead. A single day’s visit to a working set was all it took to convince Besson that this was the right path - he left school, filmed a short and headed to Paris to make his name in the movies.

By the 1980s, he had succeeded. Besson’s feature debut, LE DERNIER COMBAT (which also launched actor Jean Reno’s career), was a striking sci-fi calling card, and his follow-up, SUBWAY, received an astonishing 13 César Award nominations and showed its director was equally at ease in an underworld milieu. Oceanic epic THE BIG BLUE became a sensation in France while the cloak-and-dagger action of LA FEMME NIKITA set the mold for many of Besson’s films to follow.

But Besson the director is only part of the story. A prolific producer and screenwriter, his EuropaCorp launched such hyperkinetic franchises as THE TRANSPORTER and TAKEN films, as well as family-friendly animation like the ARTHUR series. With production and distribution footholds spreading far beyond France, Luc Besson is a movie-making machine, delivering exhilarating entertainment - such as the new sci-fi adventure VALERIAN AND THE CITY OF A THOUSAND PLANETS - to audiences around the world.

Series also includes THE FIFTH ELEMENT and LUCY.

Series programmed by Gwen Deglise. Program notes by John Hagelston.

Presented by the American Cinematheque and the French Film and TV office, Consulate General of France, Los Angeles.
