Black Girl: 50th Anniversary Screening!

Directed by Ousmane Sembene
US release date: 1966

A historic first feature film made in Africa by a black African director, Ousmane Sembène, Black Girl is a "sharp characer study in the vein of Italian neorealism, and an incisive portrait of French-Senegalese postcolonial relations".

It follows a young girl named Diouana and her move from Dakar to the French Riviera. Throughout her time working for a wealthy, white bourgeois family, her temperament gradually shifts from optimistic to mildly defiant.

Black Girl will be preceded by Sembène's first short film Borom Sarret, a newly restored film about the trials of an unlucky wagoner.
