Interview with Alice Winocour Director of AUGUSTINE

July 15, 2013 | By French Culture

Director Alice Winocour’s first feature, Augustine, explores the relationship between Dr. Chacot (teacher of Freud) and his patient Augustine. The film is set in the C19 Salpêtrière Hospital, where women suffering from mental illness were treated. Augustine, a young housemaid suffering from seizures, is taken to the hospital and becomes a star patient in Dr Charcot’s lecture demonstrations. The film follows the relationship between the two, and explores the connections between the medical and the erotic. In this video interview, Winocour discusses how she came across the story of Augustine and what drew her to the subject matter.
