Best of France at SXSW 2015

Many initiatives amplify the voices of French content creators, CEOs, and thinkers at SXSW

South By Southwest (SXSW), one of the biggest festivals in the US for film, music and digital technology, will gather more than 300,000 participants in Austin March 13- 22, 2015. French professionals will not be left out. They will be part of an always bigger and more visible delegation of artists, creators, musicians, start-ups, analysts and academic researchers, entrepreneurs, and media outlet … They will be present in the official programming of the festival (conferences, Pavilion Business France in Trade Show, concerts, exhibitions) as well as in the French Tech Club which will gather and showcase the best of France in SXSW. 


OFFICIAL PROGRAM
For the second consecutive year, the Cultural Services of the French Embassy in the United States, with the support of Air France, will boost the French presence at the South by Southwest Festival.

“Together with our partners, we strive to amplify the voices of French content creators, CEOs, and thinkers on issues crucial for the future of our societies” said Thomas Michelon, Deputy Cultural Counselor of the French Embassy, “and to show that the digital revolution, which lies at the heart of our contemporary world, is as significant for culture and as it is for economic growth.”

The Cultural Services of the French Embassy, the Conseil National du Numérique (French Digital Council), and the Institut français offer three panels selected by the official program at South by Southwest.

Out of Bounds: The Rise of a-National Companies

The Dystopia of Digital Plutocrats

The rise of digital tycoons and its ensuing plutocracy is difficult to criticize as this phenomenon is clearly also associated with progress. How are we to evaluate the growing gap between the public and a new form of aristocracy driven by technology?

The Ideas Box: Digital Innovation Brings Culture to Vulnerable Populations 
In partnership with Libraries Without Borders (Bibliothèques Sans Frontières), the Alexander Soros Foundation and Air France, the French Embassy is delighted to support a presentation of the Ideas Box, a portable multi-media kit that boots up in just twenty minutes. It was created by the NGO Libraries Without Borders, with support from the UN Refugee Agency, and conceived by the world-famous designer Philippe Starck.

The Ideas Box will provide populations at refugee camps and victims of disasters around the world with internet access, touch screen tablets, paper and digital books, and a portable cinema, with content geared at both children and adults. 

The Ideas Box was selected for two South by Southwest categories—educational and digital—and will be offered maximal visibility, as it will be on display at the Social Good Hub (Trinity Hall - 311 East 5th Street, Austin).


An Eclectic French Music Program
The emerging French music scene will be well-represented with several group concerts put together by the South by Southwest organizers, with the support of Bureau Export New York. The recent winner of the French Victoires de la Musique Award, Christine and the Queens, as well as Inspector Cluzo, Air Bag One, Hooka Hey, Stwo, Baptiste W. Hamon, Marianne Dissard, Ibeyi, Christine and the Queens, Empire Garage, Cleo. T and others will be among the performers!

The French-speaking, Belgian artist Stromae will perform at the Spotify House on Sunday, March 15 at 8:00PM and at the NPR showcase at the Stubbs on Wednesday, March 18.

THE FRENCH TECH CLUB         
March 15- 20, 2015
Park of the French Legation Museum
802 San Marcos Street, Austin, TX

Founded by af83 and co-programed by AF83 and Austin Angers Créative, the French Tech Club will be located on the French Legation Museum grounds, in the park surrounding one of the oldest mansions in Austin. Following areas will be dedicated to gather and show the best of France at SXSW with

  • - A STAGE, providing an area for conferences, meetings and sharing time during the day, and a festive area around film screenings and live entertainment during the evening.
  • - A SHOWROOM which will host the best of digital, music and movies, with many connected devices and digital artwork.
  • - A MEDIA ROOM with studios where de the best French media will write, shoot, record and broadcast daily.
  • - A POPUP GOURMET / gastronomic restaurant and many concession areas and bars

 15000 French and international visitors, 50 speakers, 20 concerts, 2 films, and many events of networking, pitch sessions , and panels…. are expected.

Among the panels taking place at the French tech Club: New Producers - the French touch of web creation. For the publication of the report on « New Producers, the French touch of web creation » by the Institut Français and Fablabchannel, Guillaume Duchemin, Director of the Digital Department at the Institut Français will present this report with the participation of French producers: Morgan Bouchet, Frédéric Josué, Samuel Rousselier, Greg Sierra. A great opportunity to let the American and international professionals know about the French expertise of transmedia.
