Frédérique Bredin

Succeeding Eric Garandeau, Frédérique Bredin was appointed by the Council of Ministers as President of France's Centre National du Cinéma et de l’image animée (CNC) where she will take up her duties on July 15th.

Eric Garandeau has received wide praise for his many accomplishments during his short tenure. While he was president, the CNC digitize nearly 100% of France’s movie theaters, restored and digitize 229 classic films; launched Cinecult, an international VOD platform dedicated to films from the French Film Archives and the Cinematheques; created the World Cinema Fund; signed international treaties with such countries as Croatia, Italy and Poland; and started the Jour Le Plus Court, a short film festival that will be adapted in 40 countries next December.

His successor is a former minister and, like Garandeau, a qualified tax inspector and former student of France’s famed National School of Administration (ENA).

Frédérique Bredin is familiar with the cultural field. She used to work in the cabinet of Culture Minister Jack Lang, focusing on cinema policy before becoming, in the late 1980s, an advisor in the cabinet of the President of the French Republic, looking after cultural policy. She also held the post of minister of youth and sports from 1991-93.

Created by the law of 25 October 1946, the Centre national du cinéma et de l'image animée (CNC) is a public administrative organization, set up as a separate and financially independent entity.
The centre comes under the authority of the ministry of culture and communication.

The principal missions of the CNC are:

  • - regulatory
  • - support for the film, broadcast, video, multimedia and technical industries,
  • - promotion of film and television for distribution to all audiences
  • - preservation and development of the film heritage
