French Films at the Boston Jewish Film Festival

October 5, 2015 | By FRENCH CULTURE BOSTON

The Boston Jewish Film Festival celebrates the richness of the Jewish experience through film and media. The Festival engages and inspires the community to explore the full spectrum of Jewish life, values and culture.

At this year's festival, which will run between November 4th and 16th, there will be two French films screened.

The first film that will be screened is called Atlit (Rendez-vous à Atlit) and was directed by Shirel Amitay. Set in 1995, it tells the story of three French sisters who reunite in the house where they spent childhood summers, in Atlit, Israel. As the sisters struggle with the decision to sell their deceased parents’ home, childhood dynamics return - along with apparitions of their parents. With the tragic assassination of Yitzhak Rabin, the siblings’ relationship and conversations shift entirely.

The festival will also celebrate Marie-Castille Schaar with her film Once in a Lifetime (Les Héritiers) which follows a dedicated history teacher at an inner-city Paris high school who is determined to overcome her students’ apathy. Frustrated but undaunted, she challenges her class in a national competition on the theme of child victims. As the students discover the dramatic lives of these Holocaust victims, they expand their knowledge of the world and of themselves.
