French Studio Gaumont Making an Impact in the US

November 1, 2013 | By Myriam Laville

Gaumont International Television, the LA-based TV production arm of French film studio Gaumont, has already made an impact in the US since its move to the country in 2011. The firm has co-produced two series: Hannibal, currently airing on NBC and Hemlock Grove on Netflix. Both of them have been renewed for a second season.

The company is also working on new projects including a new drama from the filmmakers Tony Gilroy and Dan Gilroy: Monsieur De Paris. Set in Paris in 1931, the 52 minutes long episodes will tell the story of the official executioner of France, keeper of the guillotine and caretaker of a medieval ritual transposed into a modern world. Gaumont will also partner with Wolfgang Petersen (TroyThe Perfect Storm) to produce the new drama series King David. The show will present the rise of a young shepherd from his coronation as King David through his fall and eventual path to redemption.

Gaumont International Television is also working on the show Barbarella directed by Nicolas Winding Refn for the French channel Canal+, and another titled Narcos for Netflix, directed by the Brazilian Jose Padilha. Both will premiere in 2014.   In addition, the firm has signed a deal with Fox Broadcasting Co. Under the agreement, Gaumont and Fox will jointly develop two drama projects with at least one of them guaranteed to receive a 13-episode, straight-to-series order.

The company has also been very active in France. In addition to their new show for Canal +, Gaumont will produce three new TV programs, Resistance and Intervention, for TF1, and L'hôtel de la Plage under the direction of Christian Merret-Palmair.
