A New Documentary-only Theatre in Lower Manhattan

May 7, 2013 | By Laura Pertuy

City officials and documentary directors gathered this morning to announce the opening of a new theatre dedicated to documentaries in early 2015 in lower Manhattan. The ground-breaking press conference was hosted by Jon Alpert, the co-founder of DCTV which will be home to the cinema.

This new theater will be built on the first floor of the building that houses DCTV (Downtown Community Television Center), a French Renaissance-style 1896 firehouse. It will feature world-class documentaries made by filmmakers from around the globe and will be the first “All documentary/All the time” Academy Award eligible cinema in New York City. 20,000 attendees are expected to visit the theatre in its first years, in addition to online viewers.

Scott Stringer, Manhattan Borough President, Margaret Chin, New York City Council Member and Gale Brewer, New York City Council Member, emphasized the regeneration that this project would bring to the area, and the extraordinary opportunity it provides for audiences to discover non-fiction works. Yearly, DCTV serves over 13,000 New York City media artists, disadvantaged youth, and residents. Along with this new service, the DCTV staff will keep on organizing its acclaimed workshops, screenings, master classes, and giving access to affordable equipment and studio rentals, making DCTV a central hub for documentary filmmakers.

Documentary filmmaker Michael Moore underlined the fact that the public likes non-fiction and that it no longer should be treated like a “weird cousin” to non-fiction. “In these times, we need truth more than ever”.
