Paris-New York Tandem Transatlantic Cultural Exchange Kicks Off
Paris and New York—two cities with deeply intertwined cultural roots—are renewing their historic bond this summer through a five-month transatlantic cultural exchange. Kicking off on June 7th, the Paris-New York Tandem will feature over fifty events in both cities that incorporate artists, artworks, and themes native to the other.
The Mayoral Offices of Paris and New York, in collaboration with the Institut français, the Cultural Services of the French Embassy in the United States, and the United States Embassy in France, will present the Tandem Paris-New York, in collaboration with major cultural institutions in both cities. An extraordinary selection of events in a variety of cultural disciplines, including music, dance, cinema, literature, theatre, the visual arts, language, gastronomy, and digital innovation, will take place.
A screening of French New Wave film À bout de souffle (Breathless) will kick-off the Tandem on June 7 in Central Park in the presence of Paris Mayor Anne Hidalgo, as part of the Cultural Services’ annual Films on the Green Festival. The Festival, whose theme this year is “A summer in Paris,” presents free French films in New York City parks all summer long.
Several other events showcasing Parisian art and artists will take place in New York throughout the summer and fall. Films on the Green Festival will continue with nine other screenings of classic and contemporary French films throughout June and July that showcase the architecture, nuance, and diversity of the city of Paris. The France Rocks SummerFest, from June 3 to July 23, will present cutting-edge French bands and musicians with 30 concerts ranging from electric to pop, folk, and jazz at venues such as Summerstage, Lincoln Center and Arlene’s Grocery. And a Bastille Day Fair presented by the French Institute Alliance Française (FIAF) on July 10 will feature over 80 French companies, bakeries, restaurants, brands, and regional representatives.
From July 20 to 24, the Lincoln Center Festival will present Le Bourgeois gentilhomme, the classic French ballet-musical created by Molière, adapted by Denis Podalydès and produced by Théâtre des Bouffes du Nord. Performances featuring French artists will also take place at the historic Brooklyn Academy of Music(BAM), and an edition of the French-American Digital Lab will bring influential and budding French entrepreneurs to New York in October. An exhibition of garments that inspired the character of the Duchess of Guermantes in Proust’s In Search of Lost Time at the Fashion Institute of Technology (September 22-January 7) are also included in the rich program.
