Pierre Etaix Charms New York

The Grand Amour by Pierre Etaix

Little known yet influential French director, Pierre Etaix was in New York recently for the release of the newly restored version of Le Grand Amour and a series of film screenings (distributed by Janus / Criterion) at Film Forum. As film critic Nicolas Rapold of the New York Times described Etaix's work in a recent article, "Not many comics can claim effusive praise from both Jerry Lewis and François Truffaut, much less a close partnership with a screenwriter of Luis Buñuel movies and a role in a Robert Bresson film. Yet the French performer Pierre Etaix, one of cinema’s finest physical comedians after the silent era, is little known even to fans of Charlie Chaplin and Buster Keaton.'"

The screenings and events organized around Pierre Etaix's U.S. visit were well received by the New York audience, with glowing reviews in the New York Times, the New Yorker (blog), Wall Street Journal and more.

This program was made possible with support from the Cultural Services of the Embassy of France, the French Institute, Unifrance, Groupama Gan, and the Technicolor Foundation who restored his films.
