The International Emmy Awards recognize the best films and TV series produced outside of the United States each year. For its 41st edition, 36 productions from 19 countries were nominated in 9 categories. This year French TV series The Returned and the documentary 5 Broken Camera, a French co-production, received awards.

The Returned, already broadcast in 40 countries, including the United States, Canada, Australia, Germany, all South America and the UK, received the award for Best Dramatic TV Series.

During her acceptance speech, one of The Returned’s producers, Caroline Benjo, thanked the French channel who produced it, Canal+, which has increasingly supported ambitious French TV series, “for their bold choices” in programming. Season 2 is schedule to begin shooting in February 2014.

5 Broken Cameras, a French, Palestinian and Israeli co-production got the Emmy for Best Documentary.  Written and directed by Emad Burnat and Guy Davidi, it tells the story of the struggles of the inhabitants of the village of Bil'in in Palestine against the construction of a wall by the Israeli military separating them from new settlements on the West Bank. Already nominated for the Oscar for best documentary in 2013, 5 Broken Cameras is also the recipient of the Best Foreign Filmmaker award at the 2012 Sundance Festival, and the Public and Jury Awards during the International Documentary Film Festival of Amsterdam in 2011. The filmmaker Emad Burnat, from Bil'lin himself, thanked the International Emmy committee for this “honor”, adding that he was the first Palestinian to receive an Emmy Award.

Five other countries also received awards: Australia, Brazil (Emmy Award for Best Actress for Fernanda Montenegro in Sweet Mother), Germany, South Korea and United Kingdom (Sean Bean, best actor in Accused).
