The Mystery of Picasso

Henri-Georges Clouzot’s The Mystery of Picasso, a rare, cinematic glimpse into the process of artist Pablo Picasso, will run in a new 4K DCP restoration at Film Forum.

Pablo Picasso works, drawing in inks and oils on semi-transparent materials, while Clouzot’s camera observes the results from behind. The mystery of Picasso allows the viewer to understand the mind of the most influential artist of the 20th century through every brushstroke.

Winner of a special jury prize at the 1956 Cannes Film Festival, Clouzot's film is now regarded as one of cinema’s greatest art documentaries – when it initially failed to wow American audiences or critics and fell out of circulation for over 20 years. Declared a “national treasure” by the French government in 1984, its importance in the international art community has grown over time, just like a work of art itself. “When we are all dead, you and me and everyone,” Clouzot said to Picasso, “the film will still continue to be projected.”
