Central Park Summerstage Celebrates Its 30th Anniversary

A New York institution, City Parks Foundation's SummerStage celebrated its 30th anniversary this April in the ballroom of the Cultural Services of the French Embassy on Fifth Avenue.

Since 1986, SummerStage has been the largest free performing arts festival in New York. In this 30th season, performances run from May through September and include a diverse array of international performances, among them several French acts. Last June, SummerStage, in association with The Cultural Services of the French Embassy and Bureau Export in New York, presented Fête de la Musique with -M- (Mathieu Chedid) and Émilie Simon in Central Park, preceded by a sold-out performance by French rap legends IAM in 2013. In 2015, French-produced acts appearing at SummerStage include Ibeyi, Meshell Ndegeocello, Angélique Kidjo, and Mayra Andrade.

Among those in attendance at SummerStage's 30th anniversary event was Cultural Counselor of France in the United States, Benédicte de Montlaur whose speech was followed by short remarks from Ian Noble, president of SummerStage. Both Noble and de Montlaur expressed gratitude and enthusiasm for the shared success of SummerStage and French music in the United States.
