Emmanuel Ceysson Named Principal Harpist Of The Metropolitan Opera Orchestra

Emmanuel Ceysson, principal harpist at the Opéra National de Paris for the past decade, has won the audition at the Metropolitan Opera for the seat left vacant by Deborah Hoffman who died in February 2014. He will start in September, performing one his favorite pieces: Tannhäuser by Wagner.

In an interview for the website HarpColumn, the young harpist explained what a great opportunity the audition was for him as he has always dreamed of joining the New York institution: “The Met is such a legendary house! […] When I heard about the audition, I didn’t hesitate much… It also came as the opportunity of a radical life change—I am someone that needs change from time to time, and it came just at a right moment in my life […]”

Emmanuel Ceysson, thanks to his unfailing commitment to his instrument, has earned numerous high international distinctions: he won the Gold Medal and a special performance prize at the USA International Harp Competition (Bloomington) in 2004, First Prize and six special prizes at the New York Young Concert Artist Auditions in 2006, and First Prize at the prestigious ARD Competition in Munich in September 2009, thus becoming the first harpist to obtain awards at three major international events.

The youngest Harp Soloist of the Opéra National de Paris

Ceysson is a rising star in the harp world, whose “technique and musicianship are virtually flawless” according to The Washington Post

A Naïve artist since January 2012, the prodigy, principal harp soloist at the Bastille since his 22, has released an album named ‘Belle-Epoque’ which tells the story of the French Post Romantic Concerto in the early 20th century.

With his entrance to the MET, Emmanuel Ceysson is one of the most promising harpists of his generation. You’ll be able to listen to his beautiful virtuosic playing during the Nuits d’été de l’Abbaye de Fontfroide and during his next performance at the Théâtre des Bouffes du Nord in Paris.
