Camille Blatrix at the Wattis Institute

Camille Blatrix’s objects are bittersweet—they are impeccably fabricated but fraught with emotional entanglement. The surfaces are scrutinized, the edges are caressed, each detail is perfected, and yet the metaphors remain abstract and the origin stories never clear. The Wattis Institute in San Francisco presents "Heroe", an exhibition on show from September 8th, 2016 to November 19th, 2016.

Ibrahim Maalouf at JALC

Hailed by The New York Times as a "virtuoso of the quarter-tone trumpet," Ibrahim Maalouf combines jazz improvisation and European classical influences with the sounds of his native Lebanon and home in France, a far-reaching blend of cultures. Tonight's concert features a stellar ensemble of Frank Woeste, Scott Colley, Rick Margitza, and Clarence Penn. They will pay homage to one of the greatest Arabic divas of all time – Egyptian icon Oum Kalthoum – with a sprawling, one-of-a-kind interpretation of her most beloved hit: "Alf Leila wa Leila." Maalouf explains, "This piece is one of the all-time classics that is celebrated across the Arab world, and yet it remains virtually unknown in the rest of the world, so this is an opportunity for me to present this symphonic masterpiece." Maalouf is an inspirational cross-cultural visionary, and Kalthoum – to be performed in its entirety – is a gripping synthesis of powerful musical traditions. Free pre-concert discussions nightly, 6pm and 8:30pm.

Tania Mouraud: Everyday Ogres

In the exhibition Everyday Ogres, Mouraud presents a new work that expands her efforts to the Gulf Coast. Commissioned by the Visual Arts Center with the support of the Cultural Service of the French Embassy in Houston, Mouraud traveled to Texas in June 2016 to film oil refineries along the Houston Ship Channel: sites that represent the dangerous monumentality and surreal everydayness surrounding energy use and production in the United States. Filmed at night, the installation captures a haunting vision of metal cities filled with toxic smoke and threatening power.

This exhibition will celebrate the artist’s achievements as a master draftsman. A similar brio and inventiveness mark the artist’s etchings, and examples of these will also be featured. Among the 100 works on paper on view, nearly half are from private collections, some of which will be shown publicly for the first time. The exhibition will thus provide a rare opportunity to see well-loved masterpieces alongside new discoveries and works that have long been out of the public eye.

"Filming at the Borders: Migrating to Europe Today" film series at Columbia Maison Française

The world today counts more displaced people than at any time since 1945, and Europe is facing the most significant arrival of migrants in the postwar period. Though politicians and the mass media often depict this phenomenon as a threat, filmmakers have created important works that propose alternative perspectives. This special series presents screenings of ten recent films followed by in-depth discussions with the filmmakers and academic specialists in disciplines ranging from philosophy and history to film studies, sociology and legal studies. Ten films offering new perspectives on the migrant crisis in Europe, curated by Nora Philippe and presented by the Columbia Maison Française.
