One of the most notable figures of the musical and political scenes of Tunisia, singer/songwriter Emel Mathlouthi will be at Desert Daze in Joshua Tree, CA from October 12- 15. Discover this extraordinary singer and her revolutionary artistic and political work at this desert event!

Known for her role as a protest singer in the Arab Spring and Tunisian Jasmine Revolution, Emel Mathlouthi's critically acclaimed debut album, Kelmti Horra (My Word is Free) was released in 2012. Defining herself as a "revolutionary," Mathlouthi actively supported and participated in the non-violent protest movements in 2010-2011, first in Tunisia (where the eponymous song of her first album, My Word is Free, became a symbol of the revolution) and then in France. She also strongly advocates for women’s rights in the Arab world and, in 2014, participated in Ayat Najafi’s documentary No Land’s Song, which protests the condition of female singers and artists in Ahmadinejad’s Iran.

Her musical work and longstanding political struggle were rewarded with a nomination as one of the top fifteen acts of 2015 by Popmatters and a solo performance at the Nobel Peace Prize Ceremony in 2015.

Always focused on the relationship between her musical quest and her political and social commitment, Mathlouthi released her second album, Ensen, this year, representing the culmination of her artistic journey. Sung almost entirely in Arabic, the album utilizes the unique mix of North African rhythms and modern electric beats that has always been characteristic of her work. Experience the powerful intensity of her vocals and discover the depths of her musical work at this year's Desert Daze festival.
