French Grammy Awards Nominees 2017

The Recording Academy has just released its list of nominees for the 2017 Grammy Awards Ceremony, to be held next February in Los Angeles. The 2017 is, once again, very strong with nominations of French artists and labels, notably with Jean-Michel Jarre nominated in an electro category, Gojira nominated in two rock categories, and a legion of nominations for the label Harmonia Mundi and its imprints.

Celebrating the legacy of Rameau - an interview with Ryan Brown, Opera Lafayette

According to the foundations of musical harmony established in the Traité de l’harmonie, “the Ancients” based the rules of harmony on melody, instead of beginning with harmony. The author of this famous text – one on harmony which is now the basis of most 20th-century music textbooks – is Jean-Philippe Rameau (1683 – 1764), a French composer of the late Baroque period who earned recognition through his complex operas and research in music theory.

Franck Amsallem at Mezzrow in April

As a composer, Franck Amsallem, composed for and conducted the WDR Jazz Orchestra and the National Jazz Orchestra of France (O.N.J.), the Mel Lewis Jazz Orchestra, and several chamber and symphony orchestras. Other commissions include “Place Du Temps” for chamber orchestra, and “Brooding” for solo piano (2013). In 2009, Franck released “Amsallem Sings”, showcasing his talents as a pianist-singer, and featuring 12 songs from the Great American Songbook. A trio opus, “Franck Amsallem Sings Vol. II” was released in September 2014. Franck Amsallem will perform in April at Mezzrow with the great bassist Matt Penman.

CharlElie Couture to Perform in California

CharlElie Couture has not only made a name for himself as a talented singer/songwriter, he has also established an excellent reputation as a painter, photographer and producer. He will be joined by Karim Attoumane (guitar) and Blake Miller (accordion, banjo and violin) to perform new songs as well as his classic hits in a set of two-night engagements in Los Angeles at the Raymond Kabbaz Theatre on March 24th and 25th and the 26th and 27th at the Lycée Français de San Francisco.
