Art²: Tim Griffin & The New Existentialism

Held at The Kitchen on April 26th, 2014, "The New Existentialism" was a symposium that brought together French and American thinkers to discuss recent shifts in art, theory and philosophy, particularly in France, away from anthropocentric, subject-centered thought towards new models of realism, objectivity and even metaphysics. In other words, philosophical moves away from talking about how we perceive the world towards discussions of what and how the world is independent of humanity's relationship to it. In this video, Tim Griffin, Chief Curator and Executive Director at The Kitchen, discusses how he conceived of the symposium as a way of considering the "viability of criticism" and whether what he calls "the New Existentialism," a category that encompasses French thinkers like Alain Badiou, Quentin Meillassoux and Francois Laruelle, might offer new ways to offer "meaning to what we do today."
