Saâdane Afif Winner Of The 2015 Meurice Prize

The 8th Meurice Prize was awarded to Saâdane Afif and the Mehdi Chouakri Gallery for his project, Das Ende der Welt.

Afif was born in Vendôme, France, and lives and works in Berlin. Defined as ‘post-conceptual’, his work is about interpretation, exchange and circulation.

Das Ende der Welt (The End of the World) is a film of the recording of a piece of music for choir and percussion, which Afif commissioned from Augustin Maurs for his exhibition at the Museum für Naturkunde in Berlin. The composition, which takes a narrative and figurative course, was inspired by the panic that would ensue just after the end of the world. The film will be made in a theatre in Berlin. Inspired by the austere aesthetic of classical concert films that document the interpretation of a piece, the film will primarily depict a group of humans who, while taking part in a collective activity – singing – are also expressing their own demise through the very nature of the piece. The switch back and forth between documentary and musical performance is reflected by the delicacy of the film, whose camera movement attempts to capture the emotion of each member of the choir. The film will be exhibited in the form of a one-channel video installation projected on a screen, with great attention given to the way the space sounds. As with all his work, Saâdane Afif will commission a series of lyrics for this film project.
