Press Announcement For Upcoming Lascaux Exhibition: Prehistoric Masterpieces

On Tuesday June 18th, the Houston Museum of Natural Science and the Consulate General of France in Houston proudly announced a major upcoming exhibition on the cave paintings of Lascaux France. Scenes from the Stone Age: The Cave Paintings of Lascaux, opens October 19 and runs through March 23, 2014.

The - full-scale replica of a cave environment - exhibition was created by The General Council of Dordogne, with support provided by the Regional Council of Aquitaine, the French Ministry of Culture and Communication, and the European Union.

That evening, Bernard Cazeau, senator of Dordogne, and Joel Bartsch, president and CEO of the Museum of Natural Science in Houston signed the lease for the exhibition. After the Field Museum in Chicago, The Houston Museum of Natural Science is the second venue, and one the very few, in North America to showcase this highly anticipated Upper Paleolithic art exhibition.

The Lascaux cave paintings are considered masterpieces of ancient art, icons of a far earlier time – almost 20,000 years old– showing the creativity and intelligence of our early ancestors.
