The Rite Of Spring Centennial

On May 29, 1913, Sergei Diaghilev’s Ballets Russes presented Le Sacre du printemps, with music by Igor Stravinsky and choreography by Vaslav Nijinsky resulting in a now infamous riot in the Théâtre des Champs-Élysées in Paris. More importantly, long after that fateful night, the piece created an artistic uproar whose rhythms and repercussions would change the course of dance and music throughout the 20th century.

This year, many artists and choreographers are celebrating the centennial of the 1913 Paris performance, but for many more who have been inspired by Stravinsky and Nijisnki’s work over the years, the celebration never ceased...

This May, Le Sacre du printemps returned to the Theatre des Champs Elysees with four performances of Millicent Hodson and Kenneth Archer’s 1987 reconstruction of the historic work. The piece will be performed by the Ballet and Orchestra of Theatre Mariinsky under the direction of Valery Gergiev, and followed by a new work by choreographer Sasha Waltz. more info

Earlier this month, Dominique Brun presented her own reconstruction of Le Sacre du Printemps. Entitled Sacre #197, the work consists of six dances inspired by Valentine Gross Hugo's drawings of Nijinski's choreography for Le Sacre. more info
