France Summer Performing Arts Festivals

From Paris to Marseille and from the most renowned to the most intimate festivals, if you happen to be across the pond, you'll have the opportunity to discover a variety innovative programming. It will also be the occasion to discover the work of American and French artists we follow, and whose many productions have been supported by the FUSED and THEATER programs of FACE Foundation along the years.

From the cutting-edge proposals of the Rencontres Chorégraphiques Internationales de Seine Saint-Denis to the street shows of the Festival International de Théâtre de Rue in Aurillac, there is something for every taste!

At the Rencontres Chorégraphiques Internationales de Seine Saint-Denis, near Paris, Rotterdam-based American artist Connor Schumacher will present Boy oh Boy 2: God's first creature from May 26 through 28. American choreographer Eleanor Bauer will also present (BIG GIRLS DO BIG THINGS) on June 6 and 7.

She will also be part of the Avignon Festival running through July where she will present, in association with Finnish choreographer Veli Lehtovaara, Intérêt pour quoi que ce soit. American actress Kate Moran will also be there and will present Contrechamp in partnership with French cinema director Rebecca Zlotowski. French playwright Valère Novarina will also be part of the programming as well as Emmanuelle Vo Dinh’s Tombouctou déjà-vu, work for which she had a residency at the Baryshnikov Arts Center, and that will be presented in New York in 2016. The Avignon Festival will also feature Monumenta 0 by Eszter Salamon who received a grant from FUSED for its sequel Monumenta 0.1, and that will premiere during the season 2015/2016.

The Latitudes Contemporaines in Lille will also present Monumenta 0 on June 3. From June 11 through 13, the festival will highlight the last work of Brussels-based American choreographer Daniel Linehan, A Rite of Spring, which will be presented on June 19 at June Events near Paris. Down south, at Montpellier Danse, Trajal Harrell will premiere his latest work The Ghost of Montpellier Meets the Samurai on June 25 and 26. This project, a 2015 FUSED grantee, will then begin a worldwide tour. David Wampach who was part of DANSE : A French-American Festival of Performance & Ideas, will present his latest work, Urge.

The Lyon Opera Ballet, after its successful North American tour, will settle down for two days at the Festival de Marseille, presenting Sarabande by Benjamin Millepied followed by Steptext and One Flat Thing, reproduced, both by William Forsythe. Just next door, at the Festival International d'Art Lyrique d'Aix-en-Provence, American opera director Peter Sellars will present his adaptation of Tchaïkovski’s Iolenta and Stravinsky’s Perséphone. Ana Sokolović’s Svadba, staged by American couple Ted Huffman & Zack Winokur, will also premiere.

Finally, last but not least, ALVIN AILEY AMERICAN DANCE THEATER, under the direction of Robert Battle, will be in Paris for three weeks as part of the Festival International des Etés de la Danse, and will present 18 different ballets.
