French Designer Samy Rio Awarded Grand Prix At Design Parade

Founded in 2005, Design Parade is an annual celebration of design hosted by Villa Noailles in Hyères, France. The festival regularly displays the work of established designers, yet its main purpose is to promote young designers, with an annual competition and show that highlights the work of 10 emerging designers. For this year’s edition—which celebrates the 10th anniversary of the festival—a jury of design experts and professionals chaired by the renowned French designer Pierre Charpin gathered on July 5, 2015, at Villa Noailles to select the winner of the 2015 Design Parade Festival among the 10 shortlisted designers.

French designer Samy Rio was awarded with the Grand Prix, for his projects which use bamboo to create functional and recyclable designs. His work was previously presented in the exhibition Diplorama+ supported by the Cultural Services of the French Embassy in May, as part of WantedDesign Brooklyn. We interviewed Rio for the occasion.

The Grand Prix includes a research scholarship of one year at Sèvres – Cité de la Céramique, a research scholarship of one year at CIRVA (International Glass and Arts Research Centre) in Marseille, a grant of 5,000 euros from Galerie Kreo for a personal design project, a personal exhibition at the Villa Noailles during the 2016 edition of Design Parade, a personal exhibition in Cologne during Passagen, Cologne’s Design Week, in January 2017, a personal exhibition in Paris during the 2017 edition of D’DAYS, a personal exhibition in La Valette-du-Var, at Le Moulin in 2017.
