Artists’ Retreats Designed By Artists

Imagine seeking inspiration while standing inside an original sculpture.    Alun Williams has created a new project to construct sculptural shelters designed by artists.  The shelters, to be built in the Brittany countryside, will also be places for retreat for creative reflection.  The project combines aestheticism and function and was inspired by the natural, social, and economic crises that have been rampant in our world, causing many to seek shelter.

The shelters, like small cabins, will also be genuine works of art, designed by artists with few restrictions.  With much enthusiasm from artistic organizations, schools, and the local mayor, the project has already begun to launch.  The first shelters were built in August and September of 2013, in a valley covered in pastures next to an old flourmill (une minoterie, hence the project’s name) in Guéveneux in Brittany, France.

Williams, who is no stranger to artist residency programs, says artists will be able to use the shelters as places to “meditate, think, or simply dream.” He imagines that retreats and residencies will be open to artists by invitation or application, and that others will also be able to use the cabins for a fee.

The project continues to seek funding. Check donations can be sent to the following address:
