The Wolfsonian–fiu Unveils The Art Of Illumination

The transformative light installation The Art of Illumination: Illuminating the Arts turns The Wolfsonian inside out today. Developed by the French Herves Descottes and L’Observatoire Internationale, an internationally renowned, New York–based lighting design firm, The Art of Illumination technology brings the exhibitions from the galleries to the building’s exterior walls, and creates a beacon for art, design, and culture on Washington Avenue. This high-quality equipment shed a new light on The Wolfsonian’s collection. It projects a series of moving images high on the façade, illuminating the surrounding area and brilliantly displaying unique design, sculpture, and fine art from the collection. Using innovative lighting design and digital technology, and featuring original animation by Ken Ferris of L’Observatoire Internationale, The Art of Illumination expands The Wolfsonian’s reach and visibility. The stunning, color-rich digital media display energizes the public experience on Washington Avenue and contributes to making Miami an ever more dynamic hub for art and culture. By bringing the collection literally outside the museum, The Wolfsonian enhance its impact and presence in the life of the city, and further its mission as a public institution providing opportunities to appreciate the power of design in our everyday lives.

Inevitably, it echoes the nearby New World Symphony building which unique feature is its ability to project (in live) on its outside walls the music performed in its concert hall, thanks to a sophisticated installation. Together these innovative approaches to bringing out from institutions into the streets have made Miami Beach a very energized cultural hub.

The Art of Illumination is projected on the museum’s north and west façades and runs every hour on the hour for fifteen minutes, from 8 pm to midnight, during this week of Art Basel Miami Beach.

Thereafter, the installation will run every hour on the hour for fifteen minutes from 8pm to midnight, with the content changing frequently.
