Agathe de Bailliencourt in Residence at the Marfa Contemporary
The Marfa Contemporary Artist in Residence program, instituted in 2012 with the aim of supporting the development of artists of diverse ages, backgrounds, and disciplines, currently hosts French artist Agathe de Bailliencourt.
Following an installation at Art Omi in Ghent, NY in summer 2012, her paintings once again convey the experience of painting in real space and in nature to the act of painting within the defined dimensions of canvas and the studio. The series is characterized by subtlecolor gradations, produced with acrylic paint, pencil, and water.
“My aim is to explore how nature is fragile, poetic, brutal, and at the same time nature never deliberates in contrast to everything human. I am especially interested in relationships between elements that are recognized as natural and elements that are recognized as artificial. A question that I want to explore is: what is this more or less ambiguous field of “artificial naturalness”, or “natural artificiality” (Bas Princen) able to express in terms of conflict and individualfreedom?” says Agathe de Bailliencourt.
