Renaud Regnery

January - July 2013
Triangle Workshop | New York
Barbarism Begins at Home - 2013 - Iron powder, diatomacious earth, clay, pigments and urethane lacquer on wallpaper on canvas - 67"x53" - 170x135 cm

Renaud Regnery’s mediations in painting interfere with direct signification, incorporating the trauma of nostalgia with the proliferation of meanings generated by a world immersed in digital culture. Shifting hierarchies through elaborate repetition and dislocation, the paintings’ motifs which are entirely photocopied, scanned and printed with commercial devises, evolve in one continuous, fracturing and self-replicating system–then oiled, scratched and burned beyond recognition.

Regnery’s radical strategies challenge reflexes of visual recognition, framing analog matter amid the proliferation of digital information as contemporary aesthetic reality. As information builds and accumulates, it is simultaneously lost.

2013 Institut Français Selection Grantee, Renaud Regnery is currently in residence at the New York-based Triangle Arts Association from January 1 through June 30, 2013.

Over the course of his six month residency, Renaud Regnery has been sending photos from his studio in Dumbo, Brooklyn:
