ART²: Composing Differences

April 25, 2014 | By French Culture

Ranging from performance to visual art and philosophy, Composing Differences, a program at MoMA PS1 created by independent curator Virginie Bobin, within the framework of and part of Art²: An International Platform on Contemporary Art, provided a chance for artists, scholars and curators from France and the United States to collaborate, discuss and debate in New York City. In the following video Virginie Bobin explains that the project’s title was inspired by philosopher Judith Revel and her discussion of the commons, not as an object or resource, but a ‘composition of differences’, something that emerges when different subjects come together. The program itself serves as an attempt to create just such a “composition of differences” with each of the participants responding in their own way to the “specific contexts and political issues” the event presents. “I thought PS1 would be an interesting institution to collaborate with,” Virginie Bobin continues, “because they have shown an interest in experimental practices.”  “Composing Differences” concluded this Sunday with a day-long series of discussions, talks and performances at MoMA PS1. An accompanying book, also titled “Composing Differences”, will be published by Les Presses du Reel to accompany the program.
