Conference Alain Buffard in Pantin - Fall 2017

Mauvais Genre - A Buffard

The Centre National de la Danse (CND) celebrates and extends the radical movements and ideas of French artist Alain Buffard (1960-2013) with two months of performances and discussion in Pantin and Paris.

From October 4 to December 15, CND will mark the transfer of his archives and those of his company, PI:ES, with a symposium, exhibition, series of performances, and concert. The gatherings will serve as a forum to create and reflect, taking Buffard’s work and embodied philosophy as a starting point.

Buffard, a luminary of French choreography—whose career was ended far too early—left an indelible impression on the global arts community shedding static modes of moving and existing and fashioning utterly new ones. Buffard began his career in the 1980s performing for Régine Chopinot, Daniel Larrieu and Brigitte Farges, among others. In the 1990s his artistic encounters with pioneers in American Postmodern dance, Yvonne Rainer and Anna Halprin, coupled with inspiration from visual and performance artists such as Vito Acconci, Chris Burden and Bruce Nauman, fed his creative work until his death in 2013. “He produced a body of work that was imbued with vital urgency in which each gesture had a transgressive power, questioning what a body can be,” writes CND.

Gathering artists, choreographers, new and long-time researchers, the symposium and performances, including his iconic piece Mauvais genre, will seize the kinetic and potential energy Buffard set in motion and explore, develop, and transform it.
