DANSE: An Anthology

February 14, 2014 | By Kimberly Corliss

This spring, DANSE: A French-American Festival of Performances and Ideas, will explore dance through performances, talks and critical writing in a month-long multifaceted initiative. In conjunction with this festival, two publications will be produced by the Cultural Services of the French Embassy and les presses du réel as part of LES PRESSES DU REEL – NEW YORK SERIES, DANSE: An Anthology (January 2014) and DANSE: A Catalogue (2015).

DANSE: An Anthology gathers key writings on choreography across the French, U.S., and international dance scenes since the turn of the century.

Edited by Noémie Solomon, DANSE: An Anthology is a selection of 25 existing essays that provide a window into current issues in contemporary dance. It examines dialogues between dance and other art forms, presents a history of dance, and explores recent perspectives on dance. It is divided into three parts: Times, scores, techniques; Writing, images, affects; Spaces, things, words.

The anthology also traces the ways in which contemporary dance has become a site for vital experiments on questions of the body, identity, belonging, knowledge economies, and globalization. Dynamic and vast, the collection maps the numerous exchanges between Francophone and Anglophone performance cultures and critical thought. Many of the texts included in this volume are translated into English for the first time.

Noémie Solomon holds a Ph.D. from New York University and is currently a Mellon Postdoctoral Fellow at McGill University where she teaches dance and performance theory. Her writing and translations have been published in Dance Research Journal, TDR, Planes of Composition, and Perform Repeat Record.
