From July 31st, 2017 to January 7th, 2018, LACMA will host an exhibition that highlights the prinicpal role that music and dance played in Marc Chagall's artisitc practice. "Chagall: Fantasies for the Stage" will feature the artist's vibrant costumes and set designs (some of which have never been exhibited), a selection of paintings depicting musicians and lyrical scenes as well as works on paper and documentary footage of original performances.

Throughout his career, performing arts were a signifigant source of inspiration for Chagall. He depicted musicians in many of his paintings, collaborated on set designs for the Ballet Russes in 1911, created murals and theatrical productions for the Moscow State Jewish Theatre in the 1920's and designed costumes and monumental sets for ballet and opera in the 1940's, 1950's, and 1960's.

The exhibition celebrates the power of music and art while concentrating on Chagall's four productions for the stage - "Aleko" (1942), "The Firebird" (1945), "Daphnis and Chloé" (1958) and "The Magic Flute" (1967).
