Malian director Cheick Oumar Sissoko will be at the Harvard Film Archive to present two of his films: Genesis (La Genèse, 1999) and Guimba the Tyrant (Guimba, un tyran, une époque, 1995). Sissoko is the 14th McMillan-Stewart Fellow in Distinguished Filmmaking.

La Genèse, 1999. Screened in the Un Certain Regard category at the 1999 Cannes Film Festival.

Inspired by the Holy Book of Genesis, this film chronicles the power struggle between two families: a clan of herders led by Jacob and another clan of hunters fronted by his brother Esau. Caught in the crossfire is their cousin, Hamor, and his tribe of farmers.

Guimba the Tyrant

Monday, November 10 at 7 p.m.
Guimba, un tyran, une époque, 1995

This motion picture details the rise and fall of a cruel and despotic village chief, Guimba, and his son Jangine in a fictional village in the Sahel of Mali.
