GEORGIA STATE UNIVERSITY presents

Bizet's Carmen

In 1950s pre-revolution Cuba, FATE is no one’s friend!  Gypsy girls work in cigar factories for little pay, and, if they play their cards wrong, results can be deadly.  Carmen is just such a girl with little prospects for a future in a searing, spiraling pit of political, economic, and moral decay.  If finding a man is the best hope of escaping the fangs of FATE, Carmen has found two…at least she thinks she has.  Her first romance, a hot-headed, exiled soldier-boy, José, has been re-stationed to Chaparra, where Carmen has found the only employment near Pastia’s bar, the HQ of the local Gypsy drug-smuggling operation.  The second is a hot-bodied ex-toreador, Escamillo, trying to make his comeback despite America’s recent crackdown on bullfighting. In our intimate setting with extraordinary young artists, all soloists in their own right, our CARMEN (or CARMENCITA) is just that:  intimate…succinct, seductive, sizzling, and sultry…but not so sizeable.  The fat has been shorn, the ensemble spared, the evening shortened.  Vocally visceral, juicy jealousy, sexplosive sensuality make CARMENCITA a study of desperate control vs. FATE!
