From May 17-23, 2017, on the occasion of WantedDesign, discover Hors Pistes, a collaborative residency program “off the beaten track” between designers and artisans, co-founded by the product designers Amandine David and Marie Douel.

Hors Pistes initiates creative encounters, enabling young designers to discover foreign traditional techniques, and artisans to diversify the field of application of their know-how.

During one-month residences, craftsmen and designers share their knowledge and their culture, in order to develop a project together. They experiment in the workshops and get inspired from the identity of the territory. By breaking their working habits and by collaborating off the beaten track, craftsmen and designers renew their creation processes and carry out a project with a multicultural identity. Each residency program takes place on a territory chosen for its crafts and identity.

A US premiere, this exhibition will showcase a selection of objects, images and publications from the two previous Hors Pistes workshops held in Burkina Faso – Ouagadougou in 2013 and Banfora in 2014.

This selection includes Argentique, a collaboration among Paris-based designer Valentine Dubois, Ouagadougou-based artisan Emmanuel Ilboudo, and his workshop of aluminum casters, who together created a series of trays imprinted with the textures of local vegetation. Another highlight is Brassée, a collaborative line of silver rings and bracelets by Nigerian jeweler Mohamed Bididane and Strasbourg jeweler Annie Sibert.

As part of Oui Design, a program initiated by  the Cultural Services of the French Embassy in the United States, supported by Institut Français-Paris, the French Ministry of Culture and Communication, FACE Foundation, the Florence Gould Foundation, Van Cleef & Arpels, Air France.
