From September 9th to October 1st, the LA Opera will be performing Carmen, opera's most seductive temptress, starring Ana María Martínez, and tickets are selling fast!

Written by French composer Georges Bizet, Carmen is based on Prosper Mérimée's 1845 novella of the same title. Set in southern Spain, the opera follows the downfall of a naïve soldier named Don José after he is seduced by the fiery Carmen and practically abandons his previous life. But things take a turn for the worst when Carmen falls in love with the glamorous toreador, Escamillo. Conforming to the genre of opéra comique, Carmen's musical numbers are separated by dialogue, the most popular of which are "Habanera" in act 1 and "Toreador Song" in act 2.

First performed at Opéra-Comique in Paris on March 3, 1875, the opera shocked audiences with its breaking of conventions and depictions of immortality and lawlessness. Even though Carmen would end up breaking ground for new themes in opera, its premiere was met with much criticism and indifference from the public. As time progressed, the reviews became more positive and Carmen is now known for the brilliant melody, harmony, atmosphere and orchestration of is music. Now one of the most popular and frequently performed classical operas, Carmen is known around the world.

"More great hit tunes per square foot than any other opera." - Los Angeles Times

The opera will be in French with projected English translations.
