As part of a group exhibition titled "Upstream," French artists Laure Prouvost and Louise Sartor will be showing their work at the Ghebaly Gallery from September 9th to October 7th.

Known for her lush, immersive films and collage installations, Laure Prouvost says that in her work "fiction and reality really get tangled." Born in a suburb of Lille, Prouvost studied film at Central Saint Martins and attended Goldsmiths, University of London. A 2013 Turner Prize winning artist, Prouvost was also a prize winner at the Oberhausen Film Festival in 2014. Just one aspect of her mixed-media work, Prouvost's films are a rich assortment of pictures, sounds and spoken and written phrases. Both seductive and jarring, these films are nestled into installations filled with an assortment of found objects relating to the imagery and themes of the film. Not allowing for passive viewing, her work directly addresses the viewer and pulls them into her vision.

With observed portrait paintings of women on unexpected surfaces, mysterious figures pervade Louise Sartor's work. In these small-scale paintings on scraps of paper casually pinned to walls, Sartor never shows the subject's faces but instead communicates their state of mind through their hand gestures and clothes. The delicate fragility of her work strongly contrasts with the violence of the torn paper, creating an intriguing contrast. Nominated for the 2016 Ricard Foundation Prize, Sartor earned her masters at the Ecole nationale supérieure des Beaux-Arts in 2015.
