From May 25 - July 23, 2017, Clearing presents Riddles, an exhibition by Marguerite Humeau, and Mists, an exhibition by Loïc Raguénès.

RIDDLES - an exhibition by Marguerite Humeau

As a typical of her practice, this new body of work by Marguerite Humeau began with an excavation of the past. Wielding research as a spade, Humeau dug into the science and myth surrounding the origin of war. The artist corresponded with the archaeologists unpacking Site 117, the earliest recorded mass cemetery, as an entry point. Her discussions led her to early depictions of war from Assyria and Egypt where myth and history were foiled by one another. In Riddles, Humeau weaves together the speculative tales of fact and fiction to form a new narrative for the sphinx.

Marguerite Humeau (b. 1986, Cholet, FR) lives and works in London, UK.

MISTS - an exhibition by Loïc Raguénès

Working out of his studio in Brittany, Loïc Raguénès revels in the romanticism of his backyard, an ancient province on the sea. The young artist's thoughts tend to play themselves out in series. His latest body of work, Mists, exists in this contemplative mode. Much like his paintings of the weather and atmosphere, the rythmic patterns found in Mists draw loosely upon nature but his wavy lines are as figurative as they are abstract. His allusion to the ocean provide a clue into his practice. The iocean is an element in constant motion, both in reality and our collective memory. Water functions not as vessel for meaning but as a source of illumination and reflection.

Loïc Raguénès (b. 1968, Besançon, FR) lives and works in Douarnenez, FR.
