The Wolfsonian-FIU is showcasing the work of the major French architect Tony Garnier in an exhibition entitled Visionary Metropolis: Tony Garnier’s Une Cité Industrielle. The exhibition demonstrates how Tony Garnier (1869 – 1948) imagined the perfect modern city at the beginning of the last century, from 1904 to 1917. It includes over twenty plans, design drawings and illustrations provided by Garnier for this project.

Tony Garnier’s legacy exists mostly in Lyon where he realized several monumental projects such as the hospital Edouart-Herriot. During his stay at the Villa Medici in Rome, he explored the idea of urban utopia. He drafted a plan for the “Cité industrielle” intended for 35,000 residents and based upon four concepts: functionalism, space, greenery and sunshine. In this plan, each building is associated to a proper function and vice versa. By fostering both social and environmental harmony, Tony Garnier demonstrates how rational design could overcome the destructive impact of industrial development.

The museum is holding a special preview evening on Friday August 12, which includes a reception in the cafe and a gallery talk led by guest curator and FIU Department of Architecture associate professor David Rifkind.
