Biennale de Lyon, 13th Edition
Today marks the opening of the 13th edition of the Biennale de Lyon, which will run until January 3rd, 2016.
Developed by the Contemporary Art Museum (MAC Lyon) in 1991, the Biennale continues to work closely with MAC and its collection.
Artistic Director Thierry Raspail has invited Ralph Rugoff, Director of the Hayward Gallery in London, to curate the 2015-2016 edition around the key word “modern.” Since 1991, Thierry Raspail has invited each guest curator to draw inspiration from one such key word that can be applied to happenings in the contemporary art world. Raspail has chosen the word “modern” for this years edition and the entire upcoming Biennal trilogy, which will extend from 2015 through 2019.
Rugoff will thus present 60 artists from 28 countries who explore the subject of this new edition: La vie moderne (modern life). More than half of the artists will create new works for this occasion. They will explore the paradoxical nature of contemporary culture from different points of view. Their works will encourage the audience to think more deeply about our relationship with modern society.
The exhibition encompasses several places in Lyon: Mac Lyon, the Sucrière, and the new Musée des Confluences.
